The Challenge

A landscaping client of Premier Plant Hire was commissioned to create a decorative pond in a private back garden. The access route posed a major logistical problem: the only passage between the garden excavation area and the driveway, where the waste skip was located, was through a narrow 76 cm-wide back door. The distance between excavation point and skip measured 28 metres. Moving spoil manually through such confined access would have required several operatives with wheelbarrows, resulting in time delays, high labour costs, and significant fatigue.

The Solution

To overcome these constraints, Premier Plant Hire supplied a micro excavator, compact enough to pass through the narrow doorway, together with five 6-metre SoRoTo® conveyors daisy-chained to bridge the full 28-metre distance from the pond excavation to the skip. Each conveyor weighs just 110 kg and is equipped with clip-on transport wheels positioned at its balance point—making them exceptionally easy to manoeuvre and position, even in tight residential spaces. Once connected and powered up, the conveyors provided a continuous, automated spoil removal system, ensuring uninterrupted excavation and a clean, efficient worksite.

Client’s Perspective

The client was highly impressed with the performance and practicality of the setup:

“Once we switched the conveyor on, it did the work of three guys with wheelbarrows — without needing breaks and without getting tired. The job got done in a fraction of the time it would have taken using traditional methods, and at a fraction of the cost.”

Key Results

  • Access problem fully resolved (76 cm doorway navigated)
  • Continuous spoil removal over 28 m distance
  • Labour requirement reduced by over 60%
  • Completion time dramatically shortened
  • Minimal site disruption and manual handling
